Grooming on unmoderated Minecraft multiplayer servers
'It's just Minecraft' β but public servers are unmoderated social spaces where predators build trust.
How it works
- Public and private Minecraft servers are social spaces with little or no moderation.
- A predator builds rapport through in-game chat and the server's linked Discord, sometimes offering 'staff' roles or special items.
- They then move the child into private DMs, away from any oversight.
Warning signs to watch for
- Your child plays on a server with adults you don't know.
- They've been made 'staff' or given special perks by an adult.
- Activity on a server-linked Discord, or new secrecy about chat.
What you can do
- Prefer allow-listed servers or Realms limited to known players.
- Play together; for younger kids, disable open chat.
- Review any linked Discord, and keep the 'no moving to another app' rule.
