Hidden 'finsta' accounts and oversharing of personal data
Teens keep secret accounts where they overshare location and personal details to a wider audience than they realize.
How it works
- Teens often keep a public-facing account plus a secret 'finsta' (fake Insta) for a smaller audience.
- On the secret account they may overshare location, school, and personal details.
- That information is visible to strangers and exploitable for grooming or doxxing.
Warning signs to watch for
- Multiple accounts, or a private account you didn't know existed.
- Location tags, or followers who are strangers or adults.
What you can do
- Set accounts to private and turn off precise location and tagging.
- Review followers together and use Instagram Teen Accounts / parental supervision.
- Talk about a permanent digital footprint.
